WASHINGTON, DC - Representative Peter King (R-Seaford) encourages all Americans to join him this Friday in honoring our nation’s prisoners of war and those missing in action for their brave service to our country.  Friday, September 19, 2008 has been declared by the President as National POW/MIA Recognition Day - a day to emphasize America’s commitment to these courageous servicemen and their families.

“This day reminds us that we must never forget the sacrifices made for our country by the brave servicemen who became POWs or went missing in action,” said Rep. King. “As a country, we have an obligation to account for these men and women. My heart goes out to the families still in search of answers about their loved ones.”

Rep. King has a longstanding record of supporting efforts to honor these servicemen. Since coming to Congress almost sixteen years ago, he has repeatedly introduced legislation to establish a House Select Committee on POW and MIA Affairs, which would create more thorough records on our missing personnel and help families uncover the truth about their loved ones who never returned from combat. This Congress, the resolution H.Res.111 has gained the support of 280 members of Congress in the form of co-sponsorship.

In observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, the National League of Families POW/MIA flag is flown over the Capitol, the White House, the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and other locations around the country. The flag serves as a solemn reminder of our nation’s commitment to the brave servicemen lost and imprisoned during times of combat.
