WASHINGTON – On June 26, 2007, the House passed an Interior and Environment Appropriations Bill which included Rep. Peter King’s (R-Seaford) request for $150,000 for the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). The funding will be used for the restoration of NYIT’s DeSeversky’s Center, a 1918 mansion on the Old Westbury Campus that is in dire need of repair.

“The DeSeversky Center is one of the North Shore’s historic treasures and should be  preserved,” said King. “I am pleased that I was able to secure funds to repair the building’s aging infrastructure.”

The DeSeversky Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in the early 1900s by Alfred DuPont, this neo-classical Georgian style mansion helped establish the elegant Gold Coast stretch of Long Island’s North Shore. The building was bought by NYIT in 1972 and now serves as a home to offices, a library, a lounge and a dining facility open to the faculty, staff, and public.

“For almost a century, the building has been enjoyed by the citizens of Long Island for its splendor and history,” said King. “This type of upkeep ensures that it will continue to be enjoyed for many more years to come.”

King is the only member of the Long Island delegation to secure funding for a project in the FY 2008 Interior and Environment Appropriations Act.
