WASHINGTON DC - Today, Representative Pete King (R-Seaford) applauded President Bush’s decision to recognize September 11th as an annually recognized national day of voluntary service to honor those who gave or risked their lives in our nation’s most tragic terrorist attack. The President’s proclamation was preceded by King’s successful legislation and ongoing work to encourage Americans to take part in charitable acts on past anniversaries of the September 11th attacks.
“I commend the President for his announcement,” said Rep. King. “Making September 11th a national day of service allows Americans to unite as they did six years ago in the spirit and memory of the heroes and victims lost in these tragic attacks.”
Rep. King has been active in establishing this service day for years. In 2004, he introduced legislation to establish September 11th as a day marked with voluntary acts of service and compassion in honor of the lives lost on that day in 2001. The resolution passed unanimously in the House and the Senate.
Since 2003, Rep. King has worked with the 9/11 nonprofit One Day’s Pay, and Senators Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Charles Schumer (D-NY) to launch a campaign to encourage Americans to perform charitable acts and good deeds on September 11th. Together they unveiled the website myGoodDeed.org where people can share their good deed activities and ideas with others. Rep. King and Sen. Schumer serve as co-chairs of the myGoodDeed.org Honorary Congressional Advisory Board.
“I have been active in establishing a service day for years,” said Rep. King. “September 11th should be a day of remembrance, unity, and selflessness - a day to remind us of what it truly means to an American.”
Rep. King will be hosting a blood drive as part his continuing efforts to establish September 11th as a national day of voluntary service, charity and good deeds. The blood drive will be held on September 11th, 2007, from 10 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. at Rep. King’s District Office, 1003 Park Boulevard, Massapequa Park. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, please contact Rep. King’s Massapequa Park District Office at (516)-541-4225.
