New York elected officials are opposing the possible relocation of unaccompanied children arriving from Central America to Long Island.

Congressmen Steve Israel and Peter King say the federal government is considering a former defense plant site in Bethpage to relocate some of the children. Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano also opposes the plan.

Newsday reported that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is studying a site at a former Grumman plant to house some of the children. No final decision has been made.

Thousands of families and unaccompanied children have been coming to the U.S. in recent months. They are fleeing violence in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

Many believe they will receive leniency from U.S. authorities.

U.S. officials are studying various ways of addressing the situation.
